Follower count is the easiest number to see and the least useful one to hire on. It tells you how many people could theoretically see a post. It tells you nothing about whether any of them will care.
The engagement curve works against size
Engagement rates fall predictably as audiences grow. Nano creators routinely post 6% to 10% engagement. By the time an account crosses 250,000 followers, 1% to 2% is normal. That is not a failure on the creator's part. It is what happens when an audience shifts from “people who know you” to “people who were served you”.
The practical consequence: ten micro creators at 20,000 followers each will often generate more comments, saves and shares than one macro creator at 200,000, for a similar or lower total spend.
When to pay for reach anyway
Macro creators earn their fee in specific situations, and it is worth being honest about which ones apply to you:
- Launches that need to feel like an event. One large voice creates a moment that fifteen small ones cannot.
- Category entry, where nobody has heard of you and credibility-by-association is the point.
- Campaigns where the content will be repurposed as paid media and you need a recognisable face.
- Anything where the creator's own brand is genuinely part of the product story.
When micro wins outright
- Conversion campaigns. Recommendation from someone who feels like a peer outperforms endorsement from someone who feels like a billboard.
- Local and regional targeting. Micro creators concentrate audiences by city and community in a way large accounts do not.
- Testing. Five micro creators with five different angles will teach you more about what resonates than one expensive post.
- Volume content needs. If you need thirty assets for paid social, you need a roster, not a celebrity.
What to look at instead of follower count
- 1Engagement rate, and specifically saves and shares over likes. Likes are reflex; saves are intent.
- 2Comment quality. Twenty real conversations beat two thousand emoji replies.
- 3Audience overlap with your actual market: location, age, and whether they buy things in your category.
- 4Content consistency. Can this person reliably produce at the quality of their best post, or was it a one-off?
- 5Past campaign performance, where you can see it. On Trim, creator profiles carry real delivery and performance history rather than screenshots.
Hire the audience, not the number. The question is never “how many people follow this creator”, it is “how many of the right people trust them”.
